I think the city’s 4-to-3 vote on first reading, requiring city taxpayers to maintain and improve state highways within Lubbock, also means the state of Texas will no longer regulate billboards along these streets.
The state requires a 300-foot separation between billboards on each side of ordinary state highways. With the state of Texas out of the picture, the city’s rules allow billboards every 200 feet on both sides of city streets.
That will allow 50 percent more billboards.
