After reading an article in the “American Profile” insert in the Nov. 1 A-J called “Country Music and the Military,” I felt a wave of nostalgia.
I was stationed at an air base near Foggia, Italy, during the latter stages of World War II and Germany’s surrender (May 1945). Country music played through speakers mounted on poles during daylight hours, with the likes of Roy Acuff of Grand Ole Opry fame, Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys and many others.
