New museum to honor black Lubbockites

East Lubbock Gateway will hold the black community’s roots literally in its foundation.

The Caviel African-American Museum and East Lubbock Gateway will welcome visitors to the Hub City’s east side and honor the contributions of its past citizens, say organizers.

Bricks used in the gateway’s construction are recycled from the recently-demolished Wheatley Elementary School. Before they consolidated into Ervin Elementary, Wheatley and Iles Elementary Schools were longtime academic centers in East Lubbock — and the alma maters of many of the volunteers and supporters.
