The mayor of Lubbock isn’t too concerned about the storm of vitriol that descended over Lubbock last week following use of the word “haboob” to describe a particular type of dust storm.
“I’ll just say I find it ridiculous that we’re even having the conversation,” Mayor Glen Robertson said. “We’ve got more important things to worry about than what we call a dust storm.”
Haboob is a 19th-century Arabic word that describes the kind of dust storms Lubbock occasionally gets. Its use by local media angered some online commenters for its ethnic connotation.
